Hello, my fellow Zootopians! Prepare to get Z.A.P.ped! It's time for this week's edition of the Zootopia Appreciation Post, or Z.A.P. for short. Every Saturday, I'm gonna be posting a different Zootopia-related topic that we can all discuss.

For today's topic, I would like to talk about muzzles.

Young Nick Muzzled

Apologies for not doing this on Saturday.

A muzzle is a device that is placed over the snout of an animal to keep it from biting or otherwise opening its mouth.

During Judy's first day at the ZPD, a muzzled wolf is seen being taken through the Police Department lobby by a tiger officer. The wolf protests through his muzzle that his opponent bared his teeth first, to which the officer rolls his eyes.

Near the middle of the film, Nick is telling Judy about his childhood and his desire to join the Zootopia Junior Ranger Scouts. During his initiation, he is roughly bullied and muzzled by the other scouts, because he was a fox. After Nick runs outside, he removes the muzzle, throws it across the ground, and starts crying. It's a real tear-jerker moment.

Later, during the press conference, still images of the savage mammals wearing muzzles are shown on the screen behind Judy. Some of them look vicious and others look sad. Nick sees this and his PTSD kicks in, reminding him of his traumatic childhood experience. Shortly after, he scolds Judy, who says that "He's not that kind of predator." Nick replies, "The kind that needs to be muzzled?"

Now, I had several thought about this. Why do muzzles exist in a place like Zootopia? The reason muzzles exist in Zootopia is the whole point the movie exists: Zootopia, like any real life society, is imperfect. Criminals exist, bullies happen, villains are a thing. There are bad mammals in Zootopia, who intend to do harm unto others. Some of those happen to be predators, and so the force needs to find something to minimize the danger of them. The solution? Muzzles. It's just a necessary evil, just as handcuffs and prisons are.

As to how those kids had a muzzle on hand... remember that in the real world, handcuffs are readily available to the general public, despite what a lot of people think. It would not be too far of a stretch to think that, in Zootopia, muzzles would be available to civilians too.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off in the comments below!
